The old city of Cherven' (Russian) or Czerwień (Polish) was located near the confluence of the Huczwa and Siniocha rivers. The city was the object of long conflict between Poland and Kievan Rus'. It was conquered by Vladimir I of Kiev from Poland in 981, recovered by Poland in 1018, by Kiev in 1031, and changed hands a few more times in the Middle Ages. Once the major city in the region, it was sacked by the Mongols in 1241 and declined in importance. Cherven' was last mentioned in 1289.
