Mobile was selected as a site for a Navy home port in July 1985. Naval Station Mobile was dedicated August 1992. Just seven months later, the Navy announced it would close. The base officially closed in June 1994. It was the home for four frigates: the Antrim, USS Flatley, USS Jesse L. Brown and USS Moinester.
The Navy abandoned a home port there in the mid-'90s. The site still has a dormitory, medical clinic and a gym that was never finished.
