“Koum-Kapi”
A village of Arabs, called “Halikoutes” grew in the late years of the Turkish rule to the east of the city, beyond the Venician fortifications near a sandy beach. They lived in huts and worked either at the harbour or at the market, doing jobs scorned by the locals. This district was called “Kum Kapisi” in Turkish (Gate of the Sand) due to the Venician Gate built there. Today it is one of the most developed districts of the city, which attracts thousands of visitors in the summer months because of its unique view of the sea and the many quaint little restaurants and cafes.
