  • The St. Croix Flowage is a dammed impoundment of the St. Croix River. This historic route is born in the swamps northeast of Solon Springs and flows from Lake St. Croix there to Prescott, WI where it enters the Mississippi. The flowage contains over 1900 acres and has a shoreline of over 29 miles, a great portion of which is wild, public lands. It was originally created by a natural obstruction of the stream, then the site of a logging dam, and finally the existing dam was built in the 1930's as a tourist area. The county park at its site still is a busy campground, canoe landing, picnic area, and nature area. The St. Croix was an historic route from Lake Superior to the Mississippi and all in between, that hosted many famous explorers after first being a natural route for the Ojibwe people and the voyageurs. It offers great fishing in what is really a flooded swamp with the deeper channel winding through it, home to panfish, northerns, bass, and even a few muskie. Fishing is year round with a number of ice fishing contests held in the winter. There are public landings on the north and south shores, in addition to several resorts. The St. Croix below the dam is part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers program and offers miles of wild canoeing with little civilization in sight.
