Second World War 1939-1945, battlefield
Site of the WW2 British airborne operation to capture the bridge as part of an armoured advance up the coast road. The small British force that reached the bridge managed to hold out against a force of Nazi German paratroops also dropped into the area to defend it.
Eventually the control over the bridge had to be relinquished to the Germans. It was then retaken by the advancing elements of the landing army.
The original bridge is gone. Some memorials are present nearby.
