This is the site of the former Springfield Airport the place where the Gee Bee plane made history. the springfield airport operated from some time about 1928 and 1954 in the mid 1960's there was still one of the original hangers at the east end of the field owned by the Basset Boat Company and on the roof the was still the ariports abbreveated name springport. In the 1970's the land on the west end of the former airport property was redeveloped as The Springfield Plaza and the hanger on the east side was gone. In june 2005 construction on new houses began behind the movie theater in the place where the hanger sat now there are houses covering the east to southeast side of the property.
