History

Adoni was under the rule of Yadavas in 16th century. At that time Adoni was known as Yadavagiri. Yadavagiri changed into Adavani under the Islamic rule. Later Adavani changed into Adoni. Under British rule Adoni was in Bellary district of Madras presidency.

In 1867 AD, The Adoni Municipal Council was created, along with the Bellary Municipal Council [1]. These were the only two municipal townships in the whole of Bellary district for a long time.

On October 1, 1953, Bellary district of Madras State was divided on linguistic basis, and Adoni (along with Yemmiganooru,Alur, Raayadurgam, D.Hirehaalu, Kanekallu,Bommanahaalu, and Gummagatta) were merged into Anantapuram and Karnoolu districts in what would later became the Andhra Pradesh state.

Adoni is known as the grain market of the south. It is famous for its cloth and gold market as well as for cotton, ground nut and sunflower trading. It has more than 100 cotton mills and oil mills as such it's affectionalty called the "Second Mumbai". Recently some of these cotton mills were closed because they were causing air pollution which resulted in lung related diseases. But oil factories are in good condition. Adoni is famous for Mahayogi Lakshamma avva temple. She was a yogini lived in Adoni long ago.and a famous temple is situated on the hill sri renuka yellamma temple near ramajala lake . It has got a beautiful place called Ranamandala Anjaneya Swami temple located on a hill called Ranamandala. The speciality of this is that the idol of Anjaneya Swamy was carved out of a rock on the hill itself. It does not have a temple(shelter to God). The reason which people over there give is that if they want to build a temple then 1. It must be completed in a day 2. Sand from 7 shores of 7 different oceans in the world must be used and 3. This sand must be collected by a single person in a single day which is nearly impossible.
