  • Also the objective of allied efforts to take Beersheba in 1917 as part of Sinai and Palestine campaign. Multiple wells in the town were rigged with explosives however only a minor number were destroyed. Capturing the wells meant the attacking allied force, and its horses, could be watered. Failure to capture the town and the wells intact would have meant a retreat across near desert landscape for a force that had almost used up all its water supplies.
