First settled in 1642 as part of Cambridge, MA it was incorporated as a parish known as Cambridge Farms in 1691, and later as a separate town in 1713.

Lexington is the site of the Battle of Lexington where on April 19, 1775 British regulars on their way to search for arms in nearby Concord were met by a group of militia on Lexington Green. The militia were dispersed by the British regulars, but not before someone fired the "Shot Heard round the World." After the Minutemen routed the British at Old North Bridge, the British regulars retreated back thru Lexington, suffering additional casualties from the hundreds of militia who chased them back to Boston.
