This is King's College, which was founded in 1946 as a Roman Catholic institution of higher learning by the Congregation of the Holy Cross. It currently enrolls a full-time undergraduate student body of nearly 2,500, and its campus continues to expand and contribute to the revitalization of the city of Wilkes-Barre. Once a school exclusively for men, the college has now become much more gender integrated. The core of the student body hails from Northeastern Pennsylvania, as well as from New Jersey and New York, like most other colleges and universities in the region. The school's athletic organizations, some of whom convene at the Betzler Fields along I-81, use the name "Monarch." The school's McGowan School of Business, named for major benefactor and MCI founder William McGowan, is an AACSB-accredited institution with a very well-regarded accounting program.
