island, coconut plantation

Kaijen is an island on the northern fringe of Wotje Atoll. Much is occupied by a coconut plantation.
Following WWII coconut trees were re-planted on numerous islands that had been cleared of vegetation during the war. The coconuts are a stable of the diet of all the native Polinesian, Melanesian and Micronesian peoples. Other than breadfruit and taro there are few other food crops that can be grown on these low coral islands.
