A village dating back to the mid 19th century, when the Deeside Railway was obliged to bypass Kincardine O'Neil for a route from Banchory to Aboyne. A Right of Passage through the estate of Innes of Learney included a proviso that a station halt be included for the laird's convenience at the foot of Learney Hill. Around this halt a new hamlet grew up, with some of the early houses still retaining names of battles from the then recent Crimean War, eg Alma House.
