Semi-artificial island cut off from mainland by the completion of the North Creek Canal in 1896, to
enable sugar-cane barges to bypass effects of ocean swell near mouth of Richmond River during their transit to Broadwater Sugar Mill.

Of course, history being the perverse thing it is, North Creek is no longer the sugar-producing area it once was...
