Established in 1929, the Ministry of Macedonia-Thrace is one of two ministries that have geographic rather than functional responsibilities. It incorporates offices from each of the other ministries. Its principal duties are to coordinate the economic development of Northern Greece by serving as a bridge between local, regional, and national governments. It also has an International Affairs Directorate which serves as liaison between consular missions and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
