Calabar is the capital of Cross River State, Nigeria. It is divided into Calabar Municipal and Calabar South LGAs. Calabar is a large metropolis today with several towns like Akim, Ikot Ansa, Ikot Ishie, Kasuk, Duke Town, Henshaw Town, Ikot Omin, Obutong, Bakassi, Biase, Akamkpa, etc.As far back as the 16th century, Calabar had been a recognized international sea port, shipping out goods such as palm oil and slaves during the era of the Atlantic slave trade.

It subsequently became a major port in the transportation of African slaves. Most slave ships that transported slaves from Calabar were English, at around 85% of these ships being from Bristol and Liverpool merchants.[6] Old Calabar (Duke Town) and Creek Town, 10 miles northeast, were crucial towns in the trade of slaves in that era

Calabar was one of the earliest colonial trading towns in Nigeria with many of the indigenous people incorporating Victorian english names and dressing into their culture. It is the home of the can-do governor Donald Duke who is trying to turn the town and state into a tourist attraction by building the famous Tinapa resort and holding annual IAAF Mountain race in the Obudu mountains of the state. The cattle ranch at the Obudu mountains boasts the longest cable car ride in Africa (11Km).
