Construction works of the White tower on the island of Väike-Paljassaar started in 1821, after the completition of the new fortification plan of Tallinn. The purpose of the fortified tower was to strenghten the defence of the city of Tallinn from the sea. The tower was soon named White tower by the locals, because of its eye-catching white colour. The White tower resembling the cannon tower of Fat Margaret in appearance, was completed in 1824.
