Trout Lake

One of the best lakes in the area for clarity, types of fish, and general recreation. Rarely patrolled by Ontario Provincial Police boats for drinking or boating violations. Access through the forest to the river rapids approximately to the east but don't get lost in the woods. Most cottage residents don't mind a bit of discreet hiking through their properties; the lakeshore is crown territory, so it's OK to walk around. The large, old farmhouse and barns just to the east of the public parking lot has an absentee owner and an old well for drinking water, so low-key and mellow hiking and camping should be OK. Many visitors from Parry Sound and other little communities in the area frequently visit. Fair ice-fishing in the wintertime. A few sauna owners don't mind sharing their steam and lakewater for a modest fee. Excellent lake.

  • If you park your car by the lake and are looking for a camping place, the 150-acre farm just to the east of the parking lot has a number of places to sleep. The farm owner is always absent during winter and usually absent during summertime, and the smaller of the two barns has a loose board on the back wall. You just have to walk through the thorns along the back wall, find the loose board which is held in place with a bent nail, and crawl inside. The barn doesn't leak that much, and offers a shelter out of the elements. There is an old well by the farmhouse for drinking water; you may need a rope and bucket to get the water, and a filter to strain out the debris. It's also a good party barn, which young people usually keep clean so they can keep using it for drinking, toking, and general debauchery. Have fun!
  • All shoreline is not crown land. Some cottagers have purchased the right of way, so it's important to check with owners before utilizing this area. Most rocks are not marked on the lake so proceeding with caution is advised until you are familiar with the various shallows.
