In Lake Manacapuru, angelfish with red shoulders have been collected. Development of the red shoulder is likely due to natural selection in black water or deep water. In such waters, red light is more visible. Angelfish with red color are more visible which becomes an advantage when searching for mates. They have a better chance in producing offspring resulting in increased frequency of the trait in the population. The red shoulder angelfish has been named the Manacapuru Angelfish.
