Intended to carry the Leeds and York railway over the River Wharfe, the line was abandoned before the viaduct was put into use.

Eleven magnesian limestone arches with millstone grit arch voussoirs; 7 west of the river, 2 east of the river, and 2 wider across the river. Built c1846-49 for York and North Midlands Railway Company, engineer probably J C Birkinshaw. Grade II listed 1985. -Adapted from Wikipedia.
