Cold War 1947-1991, Minuteman, United States Air Force, missile silo, military museum
The deactivated Launch Control Facility for "Flight Oscar"(nicknamed "White Man's") , comprised of 10 Minuteman II Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. These missiles were manned by the 509th Strategic Missile Squadron, under the 351st Strategic Missile Wing (activated February 1 1963, deactivated July 31 1995). Since the Launch Facility was located on the base grounds, it was frequently used for VIP tours. These visits were not always appreciated by the alert crews who had to cover or stow classified material.
Today, the facility has been preserved and tours can be arranged between early April and early October, on the first Tuesday of each month, by contacting the 509th Bomb Wing Public Affairs office at 509bwpa@whiteman.af.mil or by phone at (660) 687-6126.
