A national monument since 1931, the sanctuary was promoted to the status of a minor pontifical basilica by Pope John Paul II. The sanctuary is the only part of of the old town of Anglona to remain standing. Anglona is first mentioned in 747, but developed under the Romans as a successor to Greek Pandosia. The cathedral was built in the 7th/8th century and later amplified in the 11th-13th, in Romanesque style. In 1369 Anglona was consumed by fire, its cathedral the only building to survive. Although Queen Giovanna I authorized the rebuilding of the town, it never recovered.
