Barnala is a town in the Punjab state of India which serves as the capital of the Barnala district. It is situated in the heart of the state. Barnala is well known for textiles. Barnala was named after Baba Ala Singh.Baba Ala Singh left Bhadaur with his elder brother(hometown of Patiala State)and settled at Barnala and conquered many areas with the help of his brothers the Bhadaur Sardars. Though it was a district headquarters in erstwhile princely state system, it was later merged in PEPSU (Patiala & East Punjab States Union) and degraded as sub divisional headquarter. Barnala is located at 30°23′N 75°32′E / 30.38°N 75.53°E / 30.38; 75.53.[1] It has an average elevation of 227 metres (744 feet).

Barnala is a medium sized town with all the amenities available within commutable distance. Its economy is supported by neighboring agriculture rich 159 villages like Sekha, Dhurkot, Sehna, Rure Ke Kalan, Rure Ke Khurd, Mehta, Dhaula, Pakho Kalan, Jhaloor, Kattu, Handiaya, Mallhi, Pakho Ke, Sanghera, Sher Singh Pura{naiwala},Thikriwal, Gehal, Diwana, Rajgarh, Uppli, Pherwahi, Dhanaula, Amla Singh Wala etc. It has diverse population supporting local industries and food business. Barnala has certain streets which are improving at a very fast pace - main is Sadar Bazar, Pharwahi Bazar, Handiaya Bazar, which are very wide and run parallel to each other and have streets cutting through them at 90 degrees too are parallel to each other like the Avenues and streets of New York which no other city in Punjab can boast of. In addition to this there are Purana Bazar, College Road, K.C. Road (Katcha College Road) and Sekha Road. It has an old and famous place called Barnala Quilla (Fort) which is now demolished by authorities due to safety purpose except The area of Gurudwara Saheb and Durga Mandir along with the "CHULLAS" Of Baba Alla Singh Ji is said to be renovated in near future.]Barnala is still a developing city. 25 Acre, 22 Acre Colony, 16 Acre, S J S Ngr, are deloped by improvement trust. The largest bottleneck in development of this town is Dhanaula Road (Railway Crossing). It clearly divides city in two parts. Unless a Railway under-bridge is constructed the second half of Barnala will be under-developed area. As Barnala has become district now, investors will invest more on the development of Barnala. Most of the investors now put there money in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar which has the most potential and one of the best areas of the city. This are has wide roads, good lighting, parks, Shops, Access to Public transport and all major highways.
