Le Vignole (Venice)

Italy / Veneto / Venice

With neighbouring Sant'Erasmo, Le Vignole functioned as a market garden for Venice. And you can still buy lagoon specials, such as the characteristic castradure (tiny artichokes) and spareselle (slender green asparagus) direct from the tractor that doubles as a makeshift erberia.

Both islands were once summer resorts for Venetians, but now they mainly attract day-trippers. Locals regard Le Vignole as something of a secret; a place to spin out a fish lunch at All'Oasi (041 520 4207) next to the landing stage (closed Tuesday lunchtime).
