Independence Gate, or Dongnimmun, is a stone gate erected in 1898 by the Independence Club to reaffirm Korea's determination to be free and self-reliant.

Construction of the gate began on November 21, 1896, and was completed on November 20, 1897. The gate, made of granite, is 14.28 meters high and 11.48 meters wide, and in the center is an arch-shaped doorway called a Hongyemun. The design was modeled on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris by a Swiss engineer who worked for the German ministry in Korea.
