USCGC Smilax is the sole member of her class of Inland Construction Tenders in service with the US Coast Guard, and is presently based at USCG Station Atlantic Beach, NC.

Having commissioned into US Coast Guard Service on November 1st, 1944, USCGC Smilax is the current "Queen of the Fleet", the oldest commissioned cutter in Coast Guard service. Given her hard-earned title in an official ceremony on April 14, 2011, USCGC Smilax also received the traditional gold coloring to her hull numbers.
