According to Avalon Rare Metals, the Big Whopper Pegmatite (“BWP”) is only the fourth example in the world of a rare metal pegmatite with the size required to be of major economic importance and only the second to be enriched in the rare lithium mineral called petalite. This deposit is part of their 100% owned Separation Rapids Property, and as of mid 2014 the development stage was Process development for a demonstration plant, and the production target was 2016 pending successful permitting and demand from customers.

Complex-type pegmatites are found in many areas of the world and are economically important as resources for rare metals, including lithium, tantalum, cesium and rubidium. Except for the Tanco Mine in Manitoba, the Bikita mine in Zimbabwe, and the Greenbushes mine in Western Australia, most complex-type pegmatites are too small to be profitably mined. The BWP has additional potential for production of by-product tantalum and rubidium minerals and a pure form of sodium feldspar.

  • I corrected the location using Avalon Rare metals maps on their website. I also changed the title as this is not a mine yet. Its development stage is the feasability study to create a test process plant, and only bulk samples have been taken.
