Marstall (Weimar)

Germany / Thuringen / Weimar

Weimar´s first hospital with the two chapels of Saint Lorenz and Saint Anna was erected on this site in 1383. The buildings belonging to it were used by the court since the 15th century to accommodate working quarters and stables. Until 1855, one could find the court post-stables with its numerous horses here. The plan of the today´s three-winged construction in the Neo-Renaissance style is from a draft by Ferdinand Streichhan and was put into effect between 1873 and 1878. At the beginning of the 1920s it served as a seat for the Ministry of Justice and Education. Between 1939 and 1945, the "Gestapo" established a prison in here. Today, its rooms are partly used by the Main National Archive of Thuringia. www.wimare.de/popup_picture.php?lang=en&city=w&page=12
