This is a small town planned and settled by missionaries probably in 1769 after Jesuits were thrown out of Nepal and Tibet. The name of place was probably on earlier inhabitants called CHUHAR(BHANGIS OR MEHTARS)but as per gazette of Champaran written by govt gazetteer in 1884 there is no mention of caste called chuhars in champaran
This small town nestled in serene environment in plains, in course of time became centre of education and trade for nearby places. This is well connected to major towns in vicinity such as distt chq Bettiah and Chanpatia with well paved all weather concrete roads
Chuhari has mainly christians hindus and muslims. Christians are settled converted Nepali and Hindus are banias who came in search of trade
christian prospered due to their ability to impart good education whereas banias prospered du to their trading skills, a sizeable population belong to muslims and I have no information on their origin but they are culturally and educationally very developed and form dominant part of town
People trade in food grains and sugar candy (gur), candy making is household industry here. Nowdays many people are in service sector due to development and stress on education. Now many people are engineers, doctors, professors and in defence services. I think all houses are having at least one member as teacher
Despite rise of education and affluence people are still far behind culturally and quarrel, crime against each other and organised robbery is quite common although there are less incidence now
Since time immemorial people here have grown sugar cane, paddy and wheat and trade these items. Recently there has been renewed vigour of plantation .
