  The origin of this college dates back to the foundation of a free primary school ( Ecole de Sainte Marie ) in 1862 by Reverend Father Magloire Barthet .The school, run by the Jesuit Missionaries, where French and Bengali were taught, was placed under the responsibility of the French Government in 1887, when it was named 'Ecole Publique des Garçons'. In 1901, it changed its name to 'Collège Dupleix' . Following the partition of Bengal in 1905, Chandernagore became a haven for Indian Nationalists. The participation of Shree Charu Chandra Roy, Deputy Director of the College, and of his friends in India’s freedom movement led to the closing of the college in 1908, when Shree Roy was arrested. The trial against Shree Roy was not tenable and Collège Dupleix was re-established due to his relentless efforts, in 1931. In 1938, by order of the Governor of French India, Collège Dupleix came under the control of the French Government . In 1945 , it was renamed 'Collège de Bussy'.In 1947, Degree classes, with Honours in French and in English were started and in the same year Chandernagore became a free city with autonomy. In 1948, the college was renamed 'Chandernagore College'.In 1952, it came under the Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India, after the merger of the Free City into the Indian Union .The Govt. of West Bengal controls it ever since the merger of Chandernagore into the state of West Bengal in 1954.
