Settled in 1643 as New Meadows the town was renamed Topsfield in 1648, after Toppesfield, England, a small parish in the County of Essex north of London. In 1650 Topsfield was incorporated as a town.
Today Topsfield is the home of the Topsfield Fair, an agricultural fair founded in 1818. The oldest agricultural fair in America, it features carnival rides and games in addition to the more traditional attractions - exhibitions of livestock, rabbits and cavies, crafts, horses and produce.
