In 1972, Dr. Andrew Dibner (PhD), a clinical psychologist in the field of gerontology, was doing research on aging at Duke University when he was struck by a serious concern that changed his life. It happened one morning while he was shaving. "I thought about the elderly living alone and being incapable of calling for help." Haunted by the implications of such a terrible situation, he conceived the idea of an automatic response system for people living alone who needed help but could not get to the telephone.

In 1974. Dr. Dibner established Lifeline Systems Inc. In 2006, Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands saw the potential of Lifeline Systems Inc. and a merger occurred resulting in a new company called Philips Lifeline
