It is the largest city Etoloakarnanias and the provincial capital of Trichonis built at the foot Panaitolikou mountain, cradle of ancient Aetolia and Aitolian .
The first who talked about the origin of the name of Agrinio was the historian Polybius the Second century BC.
There are some evidences for the ancient town of Etolia. One more documented of all is: The testimony of Homer's <<Iliad >> ( O 117-118 )
According to mythology, it was built by king Agrios, son of Portheus and a great grandson of Aetolos (king of Plevron and Calydon) around 1600-1100 BC. The town, built near the banks of river Achelous (the natural border between Aetolia and Acarnania), was claimed by both states during ancient times. It was destroyed by Cassander in 314 BC.
In the city there are Municipal Library and Museum , but it is also considerable economic and commercial center
Historically dominated by Byzantium by Serbs , Albanians , Turks , Venetians and Turks again until its release in 1832.
