The Sanatoga County Preserve is one of several silt basins alongside the Schuylkill River where coal silt was dredged from the river back in the 1940's and 1950's. At one point in time, the Schuylkill River was so polluted from the mining industry and careless dumping of coal silt that the water had turned black.
