Keetmanshoop

Namibia / Karas / Keetmanshoop /

Keetmanshoop with the districts Nordhoek, Westdene, Tsaiblaagte and with Krönlein became one of the biggest cities in Namibia with approx. 16.000 inhabitants and a large airport.

Originally founded by the missionaries of the "Rhenish Mission" from Barmen (Wuppertal). Today a point of touristic attraction due to the "Rhenish Church" which shelters a museum.

The city was named after the German merchant and banker Johann Keetman (1797 - 1865). He encouraged and supported the development of the region, also with his own capital.
"Keetmanns Hope" stands for his wish that the Nama tribes would stop fighting each other.
