The Institute of Technology was designed by the City Architect Charles J McCarthy and was built between 1909 and 1912. Originally, part of the building was an hotel. McCarthy had the distinction of being mentioned in Ulysses when Mr Bloom predicted that he would be elected Lord Mayor in 1906. Bloom was wrong - the mayor in that year was Joseph Patrick Nannetti.

'Memory', an aluminium and bronze mural sculpture by Grace Weir, is displayed in the students' recreational hall.
