This section of road is closed due to inextinguishable underground fires in the coal mine of Centralia. Known as the graffiti highway because it was covered in graffiti left by visitors, it was recently covered over in dirt to prevent further visits by tourists.

  • I was here last month. You have to park your car and scramble over an embankment to reach the closed portion of the road, but it's worth it for the graffiti alone. Eerie to see a stretch of road frozen in time with gaping, smoking cracks in it. I'm not sure if it was the hike, the fumes, or both, but I left light-headed.
