  • Lauttasaari is a nice place for recreation. Its position between Helsinki and Espoo, as well as its history of not quite being included, give it a quasi-communal feel. You can leave town without actually leaving town, so to speak. Also, approximately 25 per cent of Lauttasaari's area is either forest of parkland, so there are plenty of places to experience nature. Local fauna includes hare and various birds, and of the more despicable variety, pharaoh ants and silverfish. Lauttasaari hosts an annual boat show, and is home to many boat and boating supply shops. Finally, Lauttasaari is a good place to try the smoke sauna, as the Finnish Sauna Society calls Lauttasaari its home. - Original article 'Lauttasaari, Ferry Island' was written by Justin Goney, published on 'Six Degrees', Issue 9-2008. http://www.6d.fi
