Concentration Camp Commander's Villa (The Pink House) (Kraków)

Poland / Malopolskie / Krakow / Kraków / ul. Wiktora Heltmana, 22
memorial, house, Second World War 1939-1945, concentration camp, interesting place, listed building / architectural heritage

A charming villa with rose-tinted walls, but with a dark past: during the Nazi occupation during World War II, the commander of neighboring Plasow concentration camp used this house as his lodging.

The house's rear balcony was infamous as the site where the commander liked to "hunt" Jews as they went about the camp's grounds. He would shoot them with a rifle. The practice was made famous by its depiction in the film "Schindler's List"

In late 2010, the villa was still in private hands and the owner kept a collection of concentration camp related exhibits and also sometimes acted as a guide for visitors. The owner's efforts to have the house bought by a government entity for preservation and curatorial purposes were repeatedly thwarted by factions opposed to paying a premium for a site made famous by the murder of so many innocent civilians.
