The history of Neugebauer begins, as all great stories do, a long time ago. The oldest chocolate factory in Brazil was founded by the German immigrant brothers Franz, Ernest, and Max Neugebauer, and their partner Fritz Gerhardt in September 1891. When the German confectioner Franz Neugebauer arrived in Porto Alegre in 1887 he talked with the city authorities and noticed their interest in implanting new industries. Because of this he began to develop a plan to make food products.
Once he was able to get a place, a building that used to house a school, Franz Neugebauer wrote his family back in Germany asking for his brother Ernest to specialize in the area of confectionery and chocolates and for his brother Max to come to Brazil with the purpose of starting up the industry.
This is how Franz and Max Neugebauer, together with their friend Fritz Gerhardt, founded the Neugebauer Brothers & Gerhardt Company on September 17, 1891. The beginning of activities had plenty of difficulties and obstacles, but they were able to expand production, especially after the arrival of Ernest to Brazil, who brought new techniques and increased the company's capital. In 1896, after large successful strides, the factory expanded and purchased one more building and with the exit of Fritz Gerhardt, the company changed its name to Neugebauer & Brothers.
In the beginning of the 20th century, with the business in full swing, the factory could no longer keep up with the sales and so it was time to grow even more. In 1903 they purchased one more piece of land and began to build a two-story building that would be the largest building in the Navegantes district in Porto Alegre for a long time. The industrial area was expanded in these new facilities and they opened their first store of products. Once they reached this level of success, the Neugebauer brothers were victorious with their factory, which today is the most traditional chocolate industry in the country.
In September 2002, the company was purchased by Florestal Alimentos from Lajeado (RS) and has grown beyond the borders of Brazil. Today it exports round bonbons, assorted bonbons, tablets, bars, and sweets to South Africa, Mexico, Costa Rica, Oman, Jamaica, Ghana, Panama, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Israel, Fiji Islands, and New Zealand.
Some of its products, widely known by the consumer, are Amor Carioca bonbon, Bib's milk balls, Stickadinho and Refeição tablets, a box of assorted bonbons with the name "Lembranças" (Remembrances), as well as the new version of the "Noite de Gala" bonbon and the new Napolitano chocolate bar with 3 layers.
