St Albans

United Kingdom / England / Saint Albans /
 city, draw only border

St Albans is a city in Hertfordshire and the county's oldest settlement. It was originally a Celtic settlement called Verlamion. It then became a Roman town called Verulamium, then was known as Verlamchester before taking its current name.

For some time St Albans was a small market town until the 1960s when the overspill caused the creation of several nearby New Towns and St Albans (although not a New Town) saw expansion of suburbs. Today, St Albans has a historic heart but it is very suburban outside the center. It has city status and a cathedral (St Albans Abbey) and a population of 64,000. It is popular with commuters traveling to London.
