city, county seat

City with a population of 6,975 at the 2000 census. County seat of Fayette County. The name origin is uncertain, probably either deriving from the name for a proposed British colony in the Ohio area from pre-Revolutionary times. The state capital was moved here in 1820 and the city served as capital until 1839.
