Парк Кок-Тюбе (Almaty)

Kazakhstan / Almaty / Almaty

Kok-tobe is a hill on the outskirts of Almaty city centre. The top of the hill is at 1,100 meters above sea level or about 300 metes above the city centre.

The easiest way to get up there is by cable car. This leaves from a station in the city centre, close to Hotel Kazakhstan. Cable cars normally leaves every 15 minutes, and a tickets costs KZT 800 each way (KZT 1,600 return). On the day we visited the cable cars didn't run, and we were instead driven up to the top in a minibus.

You can also drive up their in your own car. There is a car park close to the TV-tower a little distance from Kok-Tobe itself. From there it is either a short walk or you can buy a ticket on the the minibus.

The Kok-Tobe area is relatively small, only about 50 meters wide and perhaps 200 meters from one end to the other. The cable car station is obviously on the side that faces the city. In addition to that there are also a few observation areas, a roller-bobsleigh course, and a few shops and stalls at this end of the hill. Immediately in front of this area there is a open park-like area, with a few benches where you can sit and relax for a while. Further over there are a number of souvenir shops, small amusement stalls and a restaurant.
