The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation is the newest environmental agency of the Brazilian government. It was created by Law 11,516 of 28 August 2007. It is a local authority under the Ministry of Environment and includes the National System of Environment (Sisnama). Its main mission is to manage protected areas (PAs) federal, which are areas of significant ecological value.

It therefore falls to the Office to perform the actions of the national policy of conservation and may propose, implement, manage, protect, supervise and monitor the conservation areas established by the Union

The institute also has the task of implementing policies for sustainable use of renewable natural resources and to support the extraction and traditional populations in the federal conservation units of sustainable use.
