The fortress of Yam was built in 1384 by the Novgorodians as a stone fortification. It survived a siege by the Swedes in 1395-1397, and another by the Teutonic/Livonian Order in 1444-1448. The fortress passed from Russia to Sweden in 1581, back to Russia in 1590, back to Sweden in 1617, before being recovered by Russia in 1703. From the 17th century the town was known as Yamburg.
