  • When I was a student in Ranchi College during 1955-1957, Gorachand Bhattacharya who came from Tulin was a professor in Chemistry Department. I became his colleague in 1960-1962. His younger brother Bhupen was my friend. Shashanka Sen of Tulin was also my friend when we lived in a Mess near the Plaza cinema in Ranchi. The Bhattacharya family owned buses and I had taken rides in those buses while travelling between Ranchi and Purulia.
  • तुलीन पुरुलिया जिला पश्चिम बंगाल का एक छोटा सा गाँव है।
  • Tulin is a small but beautiful village. I lived there for nearly two years from December, 1977, to August, 1979, as an Inspector of Commercial Taxes in the Tulin Check-post of the Directorate of Commercial Taxes, Government of West Bengal. It was my first posting to a place away from Kolkata. A small two-storied building belonging to Shri Srishtidhar Goswami housed the check-post at that time. The Subarnarekha flowing by the west of Tulin formed the boundary between West Bengal and Bihar. We watched the sun seemingly rising gloriously from behind the Bansa hill standing between Tulin and Jhalda. The sun, it seemed, set behind the hillocks behind Muri in Bihar. The small hills at Tulin, the jungles at the foothills, the hat-tala, the temple of Goddess Kali on the riverbank, the distant hills of Hazaribagh as seen from Tulin were mesmarising. The tall and slender Shri Satish Kalindi used to supply water to us. his wife Smt. mandodori Kalindi, better known as Aluni's mother, used to sweep the check-post office and our residence of the first floor of the check-post building. Shri Dhiren Das and Shri Sarbeswar Mahato did cooking for us. Sometimes we took meals from the eatery of Shri Shibu Dutta or from that of Shri Murali Dutta. We would purchase our provisions from the shop of Shri Bhairab Dey. The local postman Shri Bhuban Mohan Mukhopadhyay took utmost care to deliver without any delay letters from our respective families in Kolkata. A healthy, selfless young man named Shri Amiya Kumar Sen, better known as Gopal, son of Shri Ajit Kumar Sen of Tulin, befriended me within a few days of my arrival at Tulin in December, 1977. He became my frienf, philosopher and guide at Tulin so long as I stayed there. Shri Lakhindar Mahato, the librarian of Tulin Rabindra Tirtha Pathagar helped me select books from the rich collection of the library. The Tusu fair on the banks of the Subarnarekha and the Chou dance performances on the grounds adjacent to Tulin Dakbungalow in Purnima nights are only a few of my fond memories of Tulin. More than thirty years passed after my exit from Tulin. It must have undergone many changes during those long years. I, however, still lovingly cherish my Tulin days in my heart.
