The Institute of Cardiology (IC) was established following a governmental ordinance of March 21, 1979. IC is believed to be a leading academic and research institution in Poland. The Institute has multidirectional contacts with top centers in Poland and abroad, mainly in Europe and the United States. Cardiac care is provided to patients from the whole of the country, including 5 million inhabitants of the Mazowsze province. The experience and expertise of the Institute health professionals have contributed to the development of Polish cardiology and cardiosurgery, especially via the implementation of the state-of-art methods of patient treatment and rehabilitation.
The Institute’s scientific activity focuses mainly on:
* diagnostics and treatment of coronary artery disease
* interventional treatment of acute coronary syndromes
* heart failure
* congenital and acquired cardiac defects
* developing and verifying new methods of noninvasive diagnosis of cardiac diseases
* electrophysiological studies and non-pharmacological treatment of arrhythmias
* epidemiology, health promotion, rehabilitation and public health
* molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases
* telemedicine
The Institute has 417 beds in its clinical departments in two locations in Warsaw (on Alpejska and Spartańska)s.
The annual Institute’s activity can be presented as follows:
* over 11,000 patients hospitalized
* over 2000 surgical procedures
* over 55,000 outpatient consultations
* over 100,000 diagnostic tests and examinations
The Institute is deeply involved in the health promotion activities. IC participates in programs monitoring hospital in-bred mortality and morbidity rates, and the cardiovascular disease-induced mortality observed in Polish population. It cooperates with other relevant institutions in postgraduate educational programs in the field of cardiology. For many years, the Institute of Cardiology has been placed at top positions in hospital rankings.
