The Edificio España (Spain Building) was built from 1947 to 1953 in neo-baroque style. It was originally a mixed-use complex containing the 360-room Hotel Plaza, 300 offices, 184 apartments, a shopping center and a rooftop pool. At 25 stories and 117 meters, it was the tallest building in Europe until overtaken by the Torre de Madrid in 1957 and is the eighth highest building in Madrid. It is also one of the better examples of twentieth century architecture in Spain. It was designed by the architect Julián Otamendi (architect of the nearby Torre de Madrid) and his brother, the engineer Joaquín Otamendi.

The entire structure closed in 2005 and sat vacant until 2017, when it was sold to RIU Hotels for conversion to a 650-room RIU Plaza Hotel, reopening in 2019.
