The source of river Miass is located right at the western side of the range, about two thirds from the northern edge thereof, cutting the chain west to east. The rivulet is intermittent, often drying out after a few days of no rain. Nurali offers a moonlike/marslike landscape with trees (pine, birch) venturing only into gullies and onto some slopes, mostly western or north-western, which is where the prevailing winds come from bringing moist. The climbing is steep. The northern part, twice as long as the southern, is a bit of a maze: keep to the west if you are in for just a quick trek to the highest point and have no intention to visit the offshoot chains, otherwise several down-then-up walks are in wait for you. Curious enough the range just to the west is all forested. Very much unlike most of the Urals there is a lonely mountain to the east-south-east from Nurali, where a couple of half Tartar half Bashkir villages are underneath. That one mountain has a tomb of an Arabian pilgrim. The tomb is several hundreds years old. Recently the plate on its top has been renovated. Also, 500 m up the path towards the summit point of that mountain there is a spring made sacred, with people coming in specially to take away some rill water. Bashkirs say you first have to make 7 circles around the spring. Nurali is one of only very few treeless ranges in the largely forested Southern Urals. The climb is through short grass, on crumpling stones. For trip tips or English language guiding, please contact me at walkertalker@rambler.ru. I am a native of the area. I also speak some other European tongues.
