History:

Dr. Bell was an English physician and business partner of General William Palmer. The two founded several businesses together, including the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and the Colorado Springs Company (the real estate development company that originally developed Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs). Bell is widely regarded as the founder of Manitou Springs, while Palmer gets credit for founding Colorado Springs.

Bell also served as the first mayor of Manitou Springs.

Briarhurst Manor was built in 1887 to replace Bell's original "cottage", which was built on the same site in 1872 and burned down in 1886.
