Originally a romanesque basilica, the church was considerably altered through the centuries and by the 1800s was considered so dilapidated that it was torn down and replaced by an idealised, neo-romanesque basilica. Only the apse and the crypt remain from the original church. It serves as the cathedral of Viborg Diocese and is also the church of the royal Danish air force.
